Joseph Canella

Oil on canvas

Measurements: 100 × 136 cm

Signed lower right.
This is a unique image of the port-franc of the Empire of Austria, taken from the Karst plateau. The particular point of view adopted by the painter thus allows the eye to sweep over the Istrian coast in the background as well.

The work is supposed to belong to the first phase of the Veronese master’s activity, thus before his move-in the late 1810s-to Milan and trip to Spain in 1821 and then to Paris two years later, where he remained until 1832 before returning to Lombardy. The work is accompanied by a study by Professor Sergio Marinelli.
