Giuseppe Cherubini

Giuseppe Cherubini (Ancona 1867 – Venice 1960)

Canvas painting with scenes from the Venice carnival

Epoch: twentieth century

Oil and gold on canvas, 129 x 248 cm.

Signed lower right This work shows monumental figures in the foreground, behind which is the vedutistic view that immortalizes the Basin of San Marco and, in the background, the island of San Giorgio. Looking closely at the figures, it emerges how they are not mere extras, but how there is a second reading of them related to the symbolism that connotes them. The painting depicts an enigmatic character with a bauta on his face, who seems to be asking the waiter back for a tip, while an elegant gentleman, also in eighteenth-century clothing, watches and smiles.
