Giuseppe Cherubini (Ancona 1867 – Venice 1960) – Painting on canvas with scenes from the Venice carnival
Epoch: twentieth century
Oil and gold on canvas, 129X158 cm. Signed at lower left. This work offers a fascinating carnival scene against the background of a Venetian view, traceable to the production of the 1920s-30s. This temporal placement is reflected in the unmistakable reference to similar works: just think of the Venetian panels of the Caffè Martini or those decorating the walls of the Caffè Aragno in Rome. This painting depicts a reinterpretation, in the form of commedia dell’Arte, of the Judgement of Paris where Harlequin with Punchinello shows the apple of discord to three damsels, who dress as Hera, Aphrodite and Athena. The scene shows, once again, how Cherubini was used to, at the same time, offering two interpretations in the same subject “The Serious and the Facetious.”
