Giuseppe Cherubini (Ancona 1867 – Venice 1960) – Painting on canvas with scenes from the Venice carnival
Epoch: twentieth century
Oil and gold on canvas
Measures 129X158 cm.
Signed at lower left. This work offers a fascinating carnival scene against the background of a Venetian view, traceable to the production of the 1920s-30s. This temporal placement is reflected in the unmistakable reference to similar works: just think of the Venetian panels of the Caffè Martini or those decorating the walls of the Caffè Aragno in Rome. The contrast between the outward elegance and the baseness of the appreciations made by three “Siori” to a young woman is expressed in this painting. The scene shows, once again, how Cherubini was used to, at the same time, offering two interpretations in the same subject “The Serious and the Facetious.”
