View of St. Mark’s Square taken from the pier, with in the foreground the two columns of the Piazzetta surmounted by the statue of St. Todaro and the Marcian lion, respectively. On the right, the Doge’s Palace with its famous Gothic loggia; on the left, the Libreria Marciana and in the background St. Mark’s bell tower, dominating the scene. In the background, between the arches, the facade of St. Mark’s Basilica can be glimpsed. The square is animated by elegant figures and commoners walking or conversing, lending vitality and realism to the scene.
The composition is characteristic of Grubacs’ production, heir to the Venetian vedutistic tradition of Canaletto and Guardi, but updated to 19th-century taste for topographical precision and attention to atmospheric light. The luminous palette, minute architectural details, and rigorous perspective give the work documentary as well as aesthetic value.
